Help - Custom Tags

When you create a shortened URL this site automatically creates a 5 character key for what you shortened. This system is generally referred to as the "Five Code" system within this site. The advantage of the Five Code system is that it provides roughly a billion URL combinations, and they are all nice and short. The disadvantage is that they are hard to remember, tricky to type, and bear no resemblance to where the link will take you.

A custom URL code is like a sneaky way to get around the cryptic nature of the Five Code system. It lets you create your own code. Assuming the custom code you are trying to use hasn't been taken already, you have a relatively flexible way to describe your URL.

This lets you turn something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp x?Item=N82E16834114717

Into something like this:
http://wynd.me/cool_laptop

Instead of something like this:
http://wynd.me/Yu6T1

There are a couple of limitations however. The rules are as follows:
  • They can be up to 40 characters long.
  • They can only use letters, numbers, or underscores.
  • Characters that are illegal are automatically removed and spaces will automatically become underscores.
  • They can't already be taken. Be creative.
  • Just like a Five Code value, they are case sensitive.
  • It may be wise to avoid 5 character custom codes.
  • If you make it 5 characters long, and that code comes up as a Five Code value, the Five Code link will automatically take priority over the custom code.
  • You can only create a custom code at the time a short URL is created. They cannot be added or changed at a later time.
  • We reserve the right to add custom codes to existing URLs if we see fit.
